What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

From all accounts Jack Rose likes a beer. I don't know many people who don't to be honest but listening to his new album all I want to do is throw things in the air and get pissed. It's proper party time music. For some reason Jack's music is completely intellectualised by people. I'm not one of those people and in favour of being all smart and clever I'm gonna keep it extremely simple. His new album 'Dr Ragtime & Pals' is a pure pleasure from start to end. You don't need a thesaurus for this one. It's a right old hillbilly, bluegrass hoedown of a thing. Get some beers out, crack this on and soak in the vibes with are coated in pure 100% Americana (with juicy bits) . It's unusually quite varied for essentially an album of just guitar as it delves into the different paths of American archival music. It also features Micah Blue Smaldone who totally rules as well..... Fans of Fahey, Ry Cooder (Paris Texas era) will like this one... it's much less psychedelic than previous affairs but it's 2 discs will completely blow you away/off.... You may have already been blown away /off by the 2nd disc which came out on Archive sometime back.... now it's a freebie with this album. Cocking bargain.... 2 x CD for less than a tenner. Am off to the pub now..

What the label says:

BRAND NEW ALBUM FROM JACK ROSE, AND DOUBLEPACKED WITH THE LONG SOLD OUT S/T RELEASE (ORIGINALLY A LIMITED RELEASE ON THE ARCHIVE RECORDINGS LABEL - GETTING ITS FIRST EUROPEAN AIRING). THE FIRST DISC "DR RAGTIME AND PALS" IS JACK DUETTING WITH THE LIKES OF GLENN JONES, MICAH SMALDONE, MIKE GANGLOFF, HARMONICA DAN, AND SEAN BOWLES; ITS ROSE REALLY DISPLAYING HIS FORMIDDABLE PROWESS AS A GUITAR PICKER, AND LAPSTEEL PLAYER WITH A FOIL TO PLAY ALONGSIDE. TRULY INSPIRING, SOME OF THE TRADITIONALS REWORKED HERE ELEVATE JACK TO A NEW HEIGHT. HIS PLAYING IS BETTER THAN EVER, JACK IS A CONSUMMATE PERFORMER, PERFECTIONST ALSO, THIS IS A MAJOR WORK FROM A BIG PALYER IN THE MODERN AMERICAN PRIMITIVE WORLD - OFT COMPARED TO THE LIKES OF FAHEY ETC, JACK ROSE IS A RARE TALENT. THE SELF TITLED SECOND DISC CONTAINS A COUPLE OF SOLO VERSIONS OF TRACKS FOR THE DUETS DISC, BUT AGAIN, THIS SUPPORTS THE THEORY OF JACK ROSE CONSTANTLY EVOLVING AND DEVELOPING HIS ART. ON TOUR IN MARCH, DO NOT MISS THIS! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'is it teatime yet?'
