What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our BRIAN D feeling ecstatic.

My secret single of the week is a curious collaboration on NY no wave label ROIR. And it's a cool spacey dubstep banger from Kode 9 vs. Badawi. Yes. NY finally understands that Britain still has heavyweight hitters like da Kode. 'Den of Drumz' is just a pulsing, fast paced slab of cosmic genius really. A real head soothing roller of a tune with a snaky Arabian feel creeping in from time to time. It's all over before you have a chance to understand how understated & gorgeous it is! One to set the dancefloors alight!. This tune is apparently a remix of a tune from the album "Unit Of Resistance" by Badawi, hence the unlikely label for Kode 9 to be popping up on! The flip is by Badawi vs. Juakali, called 'Crows' and has some sinister intoning from an MC style guy over a eerie understated skeletal backing. More a set starter but not without it's merits indeed. A pleasant surprise for these tired ears is this on a Friday (hangover) morn! 12" only & probably quite limited!

What the label says:

Taken from the album "Unit Of Resistance" by Raz Mesinai's Badawi ROIR's first ever 12" features legendary Dub alchemist Badawi (aka Raz Mesinai), Hyperdub (Burial) label boss Kode 9 & celebrated dubstep artist
Juakali.
Two extremely hot tracks!!! Re-mastered at 45 RPM for that heavy heavy dub sound- Of special note- Den Of Drumz is featured on Skream's Rinse
FM's 02 Compilation & Crows has been featured on BBC Radio1's Mary Anne Hobbs show- w/ Juakali voicing the track live in studio.

Side A:  Kode 9 vs Badawi Den Of Drumz (4:03)

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!

They even checked their logs to see if they could find a trace of it but nothing came out...
