What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

After the Pixies-rutting comeback single last week, Swedish indie troubadours Envelopes throw their 2nd full length album at us. It's called 'Here Comes the Wind' and is currently CD only. Yes they're still mental. Schizo, scratchy indie that collapses, twists, turns, stumbles, jumps, bends, shambles, clatters & wobbles. Occasionally within the space of one song. The lyrics are often plain crazed. Gobbeldygook lyrics that sound like they're battling with a mouthful of chewing gum abound on track two for instance. There's always something otherworldly about Envelopes' take on pop. Like they've heard the last two decades of alternative guitar music through a warped stereo & sent the results back to us through some intergalactic wibble conductor. They don't sound so much like Belle & Sebastian on mushrooms anymore. Just, weirdly melodic, inventive & a bit crackers. There's riffs that are familiar in parts but they do have their own take on stuff, especially in Audrey Pic's wonky post Nico-isms! So, all in all this is a nicely paced, eclectic album that's a little rockier & probably as curiously impenetrable as their debut. Good stuff!

What the label says:

Envelopes return with their brilliant sophomore album ‘Here Comes The Wind’.    Hailing from Stockholm, Malmo and Paris, Envelopes are a five piece brought together by a shared love of skewed, lo-fi pop.   Their unique vision of modern pop music draws on Pixies, B52’s and Talking Heads, while sounding like no-one but themselves.
Produced by Envelopes and Tore Johansen (Franz Ferdinand, Cardigans, New Order).   Features the singles ‘Party’, ‘Life On The Beach’ and ‘Smoke In The Desert, Eating The Sand, Hide In The Grass’.
