Struggling with this Quench 12" on Love The Chaos. Some downtempo stuff leaves me all feeling listless, like i wanna do a load of horrid drugs & throw myself off a bridge way. Some folk, however, just mooove you, like Mr Projectile & that. What does this one do? The rhythms are a bit warped & it is a bit out there in places like a slightly twatted laptop. The tunes meander & stagger around like drunken tourists in a futuristic shopping centre but the whole thing doesn't strike me as hugely cohesive. Any semblance of a groove is tempered by the squigly tune buggering off on it's 3 jellied rhombus legs to the all night snack-attack-shack & buying a load of spaff cos it's got the munchies. I think acts like this are caught in the limbo land between early (melodic) Autechre & having to nail awkward beats onto everything because that's what boffins do innit? The first track on the second side is quite pleasing but quite drowsy & disjointed, like stoned electronic jazz crossed with late EU or summat. Or maybe the whole thing is just like everything else by Funckarma (a more popular alias this act uses) but i wouldn't be able to nail this style down as everyone with a mac seems to splurt this stuff outta their cyber faces. 'Fanion' is 12" onlyTracklisting:
