What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus feeling unmoved.

Thom Yorke: 'The Eraser Remixes' by Four Tet and Christian Vogel (XL) I was given this to review mainly, I think, because I'm a fan of Four Tet. I'm a little confused however as on the sleeve, the information for side A indicates that there's a mix by Four Tet and a mix by Christian Vogel. On listening, the two tracks on the A side actually sound like they were re-mixed by Mr Hebden. So a big boo boo by the folks at XL methinks. Four Tet adds his freeform rhythmatics, glistening atmospherics and glissandos with a little bass stab on the second cut. Vogel, on the flip, adds an elasticated bass throb, distorted interruptions, cavernous FX and some subliminal sinewave twists. Kinda twisted Cheap label style techno. Shame they're not instrumental!

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
