What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our BRIAN D feeling ecstatic.

Old Thom Yorke suddenly unleashes the first of 3 beautifully packaged remix 12"s, showcasing some serious re-jiggy action from his excellent 'The Eraser' album what come out ages ago like. But when yr Thom, the music is forever relevant i'd say! The Burial remix of the apt 'And it Rained All Night' is ....just a classic Burial tune with old Thom pitched up to androgynous levels, the ominous minimal garage-isms & eerie atmospherics suiting his yearning bleat down to the ground. There's virtually no point in searching for many original elements of the tracks here as old Thom obviously wants his work stamped on & manipulated to high heaven, taking on fresh electronic styles that will delight & confound his legion of fans. Modeselektor offer up a spooked technoid slo-mo roller mix of 'Skip Divided', his morphing vocals somewhat reminding Ant of Liddell & Vogel's classic underrated digital soul project Super Collider. Also there's angry shards of 'Mezzanine' era Massive Attack here, sticking out like a balding porcupine on triple sod. Funnily enough, Various Production sound less Massive Attack here themselves whilst tearing up 'Analyse'. This is a stomping, dark, staggering, juddering work of aural art, his vocals disembodied & stuttering over a crunching, brooding landscape of threatening machine warfare. The Various chaps here pull out all the stops here. It's one of their best works to date IMO. Single of the week hands down.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
