On Quasi Convergence And Quiet Spaces by Joe Gilmore

5...according to our on Thu 24 Jan, 2008.

Billed as 'five improvisations for solo computer', this collection was 'realised' over the last couple of years and put together this time last year. Now finally getting a welcome release, this CD comes beautifully packaged in hand-printed deluxe card. Across the five tracks, all fabulously titled as you'd expect with numbers and letters from a made up language of Mr Gilmore's own making, there's sound events that capture the inventiveness, clarity of thought and attention to detail of an artist wholeheartedly in tune with his outward looking sound-world. As with much sound art or computer music-if you will, it's difficult to describe what is actually taking place unless one's familiar with the inner workings of high end signal processing. Think tones, drones, specks, pocks and microscopic stereo details all wrapped up in a snowball of electronic storms, nature in miniature or digital insects crawling in, around and through your brain (just need to stop and stroke my chin). Fans of Hecker, Machinefabriek, Hafler Trio and labels like Mego and Touch will enjoy an immersion in this incredible sonic mindfield. Joe Gilmore International Sound Artist you have arrived. My album of the week.

On Quasi-Convergence and Quiet Spaces is assembled from a series of edited solo computer improvisations executed between 2002-04. The direct-to-disk recordings were often by-products of custom generative and performance-based patches developed for group improvisations. In December 2006 these recordings were revisited after producing similar soundfiles for a site-specific performance exploring the acoustic properties of the Holy Trinity Church in Leeds (UK). The material from these sessions was edited and shaped into a coherent whole during January 2007. The work explores the relationship between self and group (other); improvisation and composition at different temporal and physical locations. On Quasi-Convergence and Quiet Spaces consists of five focused, evolving pieces, which combine rich textural swathes of sound and intricate shimmering tones with dark, organic abstract structures.
