What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our BRIAN D feeling unmoved.

That man is back. The NME's prince of dubious comments Morrissey returns with 'That's How People Grow Up', a sub-Smithsian plod of a tune. It really couldn't be anyone else wailing in his charming brogue of a monotone. His lyrical concerns are still deftly observed vignettes, filled with archly wry humour etc. The music is subtly string laden, recalling McAltmont & Butler's chamber pop but really, if you ain't grasped his way with a song yet, this will not remotely convert you. If you, however, are partial to the LA dwelling Manc troubador then this new single will no doubt delight you. It's no Suedehead but then that was 20 sodding years ago & as i've always assertained, we need Mozzer just like we need Mark E Smith & Alan Bennett. He's a poet is the man although he's starting to look like George Michael judging by the swimming pool shot on the sleeve!! (hehehe!) 2 x 7"/CDs (ignore the hopeless live version of '....International Playboys' like the plague tho')

What the label says:

Morrissey is set to release new single “That’s How People Grow Up” on 04 February, prior to a 15 track Greatest Hits which spans his unique 20-year solo career.

One of two new songs to be included on the Greatest Hits collection, “That’s How People Grow Up” was recorded in Houston, Texas with Jerry Finn, producer of 2004’s widely acclaimed No.2 album “You Are The Quarry”. Morrissey is currently working with Finn on his new studio album, the follow-up to 2006’s No.1 “Ringleader Of The Tormentors”. The new LP is scheduled for an Autumn ’08 release.

“That’s How People Grow Up” will be made available on CD and two 7” vinyls, backed with live versions of “The Last Of The Famous International Playboys” (Morrissey’s 3rd single), “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” (by The Smiths) and “Why Don’t You Find Out For Yourself” all recorded on the recent North American tour.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
