Cass Mccombs - Dropping The Writ

Dropping The Writ by Cass Mccombs

OK so I finally get to hear the Cass Mccombs new album being a bit of a fan 'n all. On 1st hearing 'Dropping The Writ' completely disappointed me beyond belief. I thought it sounded like the weakest Cass album to date... I've heard it a few more times now and I have to say I still think it's his weakest work. It's getting better but it's still not reaching the dizzying heights of some of his previous work. I've been racking my brain trying to think why and I really just couldn't say why. I think he's possibly lost a bit of his quirky edge and he's slowly turning into Richard Hawley. Then 'That's That' comes on though and I'm happy.... that is a great tune. I reckon it might still grow on me so I'm gonna wait a wee while before I pass judgement as the guy is such a great singer/ songwriter it's got to be good.

Cass McCombs releases his new album, entitled ‘Dropping The Writ’, his first release for long time fans Domino. ‘Dropping The Writ’ is arguably Cass’s most beautiful record, musically alternating between mania and wonder, within a song-form that McCombs continues to expand upon lyrically, often with the humorous, wry use of stories plucked directly from his own life experience.
