To assist my speedy recovery from THAT audio disaster, i've the first 12" from Ikonika on Hyperdub. Apparently a lady, she supplies some atmospheric bleep-step beats that take you on a subtle journey. 'Please' is a sleek, woozy affair that would work as a downtempo opener in a techno set with some mild industrial clanging & a sweet, understated bassline. Ant thinks it sounds like an 8 bit computer game with a pixelated bird shitting little death biscuits onto Super Mario's head. The flip is 'Simulacrum', another bleepy bugger of a tune with a swaggering, stuttering bassline staggering into LFO's kitchen and stealing all the knives. If it wasn't so grooving & graceful it would be Mr. Stabby on crack. Ant says it reminds him of Ital Rockers, a major influence on the early Warp sound, utilising dub textures with an earthy techno sensibility. Well he said a bit of that, the un-knobby bit. Quite a departure for Hyperdub is this, but folks wanting movement in the scene will appreciate this breezy, fresh affair. 12" wax plate only.

Hyperdub kick off 2008 they way they intend to proceed, with new tracks from a new artist. On her debut release, Ikonika comes with her own very unique, warped yet soulful bleep sound. With shape shifting beats that switch styles every few bars it’s hard to pin these two tracks down… cos if it was easy, it just wouldn’t be Hyperdub. Both tunes are one minute minimal, one minute maximal, driven along by Ikonika’s special combination of wonky synth and deep swingin’ sub bass melodies that place them somewhere between an early, blocky grime instrumental and the sweeter side of Detroit techno – except with better bass of course! Who needs a vocalist when your synth can sing like this? Quite how Kode9 manages to keep unveiling new producers of such abundant talent is a conundrum, but one to be cracked some other time when we’re not so busy keeping up with his astonishing label’s ceaseless march into the future.
