Cosmic Dennis Greenidge: 'Giant Man, Giant Plan' (Mordant) More strangeness from the spooky world of Mordant. A label bracketted in with Ghostbox as leaders in the new genre dubbed Hauntological. This sixty six track assortment, although not evidently scary, is sometimes worrying and completely downright wrong. Made on a mono tape-to-tape recorder, these ditties are psuedo operatic warblings and outsider artist fantasies scrawled over a backdrop of queasy listening, found sound, blast of at least three recent dance music genres complete with rewind sounds- yes the actual sound of a tape recorder rewinding. It's like a wrong Library record, a genius, free imagination running wild, if a little close to the edge. How it sits within the Hauntological field is anyone's guess. Maybe it's the continuing documentation of British eccentricity with is fondness for childhood nostalgia, longing for a now lost past, long lost TV soundtracks, semi-mythological places and meanings. Hope that's high brow enough for ya?!

What the label says:

Mordant Music present the unbridled works of cosmic cassette minstrel Dennis Greenidge. Dennis brings to mind the work of Daniel Johnston with his lo-fi recording techniques and his love of comic books and superheroes ..these dextrous rewind button blues represent years of joyous & sometimes unhinged spooling during the late 90's onwards...57 year old Dennis doggedly collected cassettes from the Music & Video Exchanges looking for suitable instrumental passages from rave to easy listening...with the aid of two Phillips tape decks he then bounced 'that voice' to create unique Sci-Fi & B-movie tinged revelries...a feral Jack jones bursting the tapeheads......Dennis is to tape what Roger Corman is to horror...instant classics such as 'Atlantis', 'Cosmo Dios' & 'The Amazing Colossal Cucumber Man' have saved lives...you do not get many of him to the pound...his fleeting loops of aural innocence will work their way under your skin within moments..."marvel at him"...we all salute you Dennis...you do tape hiss lullabies like no other...MM

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
