What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Phil feeling unmoved.

I've heard this new Vetiver 12" 3 or 4 times now and I couldn't tell you think about it. I don't think it bodes well when a record goes over my head that much. Maybe I was busy?? These 2 mixes by Neighbors are reasonably downbeat sounding musical pieces which drift along to a point where you're not sure what you've been listening to, why, what you've been doing, who you are, where you live, what colour pants do I have on, what's for tea or anything come to that. Pleasant enough stuff but it's finished already and I'm not sure what else to say about. These few lines have been an appalling waste of yours and my time... Apologies to the artists concerned. 'You May Be Blue' is a limited 12" job only.. once again sorry....

What the label says:

Stunning 12” remix recontextualising but still highlighting the immense talents of one of todays great songwriters.·These two remixes, built by long-time Studio Partners Andy Cabic and Tom Monahan aka Neighbors, are the first chapter in a new wave of Vetiver activity due in 2008, including tours, singles and an LP of covers.   The first Vetiver release in some while, if follows on from 2006’s critically acclaimed ‘To Find Me Gone’, and subsequent tours of note with the likes of Vashti Bunyan, Adem, Juana Molina, The Shins.·Andy of course is also a staple part of Devendra Banhart’s touring line-up; they have also recorded and written together.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
