What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brianna feeling happy.

Righto. Here's that man. Warp's new prodigal son Clark. So cool he can actually ditch his first name Chris now. He's a talented chap is this boy. I quite like his newer stuff (His early gear was much more abrasive & abstract so he's come from a funny angle) as he seems to have found his niche. Which appears to be chucking everybody elses styles into a big slow cooker & making some post millennial coffee table/i-pod in BMW techno stew. It really works in places, kinda like an IDM disc camera cartridge where you get a view of loads of tasty destinations but somehow, don't feel inspired to visit any of them, just nice wallpaper. Programming skills mean nish to me when i want more than an ear massage created from the latest plug-ins. The best bits are the AFX rip offs & the scuzzy, melodic electro-tech of the closing track. It's a cleverly painted picture of sonic possibilities but it doesn't particularly impress on any level, unlike the Harmonic 313 which is lush! Less is more perhaps? 'Turning Dragon' is on CD and LP

Both Brian and I accidentally both reviewed the Clark 'Turning Dragon' album so here's mine. Sadly it's smaller than his...
We've just entered into a wee debate about electronic dance music that's trying to be too clever for its own good...Warp have been promising for a while now that Clark is the new Aphex squarepusher. He does have his moments and his tougher recent sound aint bad by any means but occasionally you get the feeling that you just wish he'd let the groove flow and stop being such a smarty pants. To his credit though there are moments when he does so decent dark abstract techno.... Clanking beats and smatterings of acid and some alright abstract rhythms etc. He even gets a bit discordant and crunchie at times and all. He's clearly a talented fella.

What the label says:

Chris Clark follows up his last full length ‘Body Riddle’ with a harder, more rave-oriented sound   Features all new material.   Backed up by live dates and a comprehensive online promo strategy.   Clark has previously supported the likes of Tortoise, and most recently Amon Tobin at London’s Forum.   Described by many as the heir to Aphex Twin and Squarepusher’s crown.
