What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Brain damagedmouse feeling ecstatic.

I'm not surprised These New Puritans had their album held back for two months. For their remarkable debut to be lost in the Xmas mire would have been a tragedy. The only real thing that can happen now is fickle journalists leaving "Beat Pyramid' off their end of year snoozathons. The opening salvo of Numbers/Colours is just a perfect double header of hypnotic, cerebral angular indie. The lead dude is right when he comments the TNP manifesto has room for them to be a pop act. I can hear the seeds of a classic boundary eating cult band blossoming here. Atmospheric, futuristic, crystaline, hugely rythymical....almost NOT human. 'Elvis' sounds like Gary Numan crossed with The Rapture but out there in another galaxy. The early Fall comparisons are bollocks now when you see the scope they're aiming for here. The guitars are edgy and minimal for sure. But the tight as a nut percussion is mightily battered, bordering on tribal ecstacy in it's future Kraut haze. They haven't time to brood like some bands & any cynicysm is more abstracted. The lyrics are a little vague & mystical, sloganeering some may utter, but the message is clear - "We're spiky, fresh & deserve your full attention". I hope that along with XX Teens they'll spearhead a silver rocket into the heart of 2008! LP/CD on Angular/Domino.

What the label says:

‘Beat Pyramid’ is the stunningly ambitious debut album from a band that has already gained a reputation for moving quickly and exploring unfamiliar territory.   ·Produced by Gareth Jones (Wire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Liars), the album is a strange and fresh musical landscape yet also has a strong pop sensibility heard in singles such as ‘Elvis’ and 2007’s limited AA side ‘Numbers’ / ‘Colours’.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
