Findo Gask: 'Va Va Va' (Oscarr) Coming across like a version of Simian Mobile Disco, this is a four track EP covering three tracks that aligns itself to the style concious post-punk/funk, disco-pop popularised by the likes of DFA. The lead track is spiky angular guitar, hi-hat friendly, fast tempo disco style beats, twee keyboard fills and bouncing bubbling bass topped with a pleading reverbed vocal (almost falsetto). Moving towards a kind of recombination of dance music's floor filling ethos and pop's verse-chorus-verse template, this mongrelisation could be described as Suction Records meets Simian Mobile Disco.

Va-Va-Va is a little pop storm, a giddy avalanche that, like a classic early Associates single, fizzes with melody and its own strange internal logic. You’ll hear the band’s love of the Cocteau Twins and the Beach Boys in the gorgeous, ethereal harmonies of these three songs (particularly B-side ‘Wrapped In Plastic’), but also in their dancefloor savvy. The band’s own ‘Disco Mix’ is seven minutes of disco/synth heaven - like the best remix Daft Punk never made. Vinyl only track ‘Go Aquatic’, meanwhile, moves from post-rock ambience through lush melody to somewhere between classic New Order and Squarepusher.

OSCarr stands for Optimo Singles Club and related recordings. The OSCarr label was started as an outlet for local talent and underground acts that Optimo were excited to highlight and applaud. Past releases include: Bis’s EP of Factory Records covers (2001), including their inspired vocoder version of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, ProForma (2002 - featuring Paul Thompson, pre-Franz Ferdinand), and X Vectors’ brilliantly witty floor-filler, ‘Now Is The Winter Of Our Discotheque’ (2007). Optimo Espacio is Glasgow’s Sunday night clubbing institution. Optimo was recently named among
the best clubs in Britain by Mixmag, and celebrates its 10th anniversary this November, confirming the club as one of the best-loved and most loyally attended in the country.
Findo Gask are Gerard Black (singing, keyboards, guitar), Gregory Williams (bass, keyboards, guitar, singing), Gavin Thomson (keyboards, singing, bass) and Michael Marshall (drums, guitar, keyboards). Gregory and Gerard have been in bands together since they met at St Andrew’s High School, Kirkcaldy, Fife. Gregory and Michael went to Fife Youth Orchestra together. In 2005, an early incarnation of the band released a split 7” with Errors (currently recording for Mogwai’s Rock Action label), produced by Gavin Thomson (of local band Flying Matchstick Men, who also featured Graeme Ronald, later of The Royal We). The band spent a year practicing in Gerard's bedroom above notorious local indie dive Nice n Sleazy's, but it wasn't until 2006 (when Flying Matchstick Men split up) that Gavin joined, bringing with him a wealth of electronic equipment, and everything was turned on its head. The band took nine months out to write new material, the first fruits of which you hold in your hand.
