What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Sonic explorers Haswell & Hecker follow up their critically acclaimed "Blackest Ever Black" album with an EP for Warp. This is way off the scale in terms of what Warp are releasing these days but it doesn't come as a real surprise if you remember the Masami Akita and Haswell LP from a few years back. Yes Warp still like to keep a finger in the experimental pie.... Oooh imagine an experimental pie. You could have one half Quorn 'n' Leek and the other apple and blackberry. That's the future of pies...The 3 course meal pie....So rather than listen to and review 'UPIC Warp Tracks' at the office I decided that it really wasn't the right environment to immerse myself in the tracks so I brought it home for the full headphone experience. The EP consists of 3 parts. Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. From what I can remember from school these are all different types of radiation. How these relate to the sounds I have know idea but I can only assume that Florian and Russell are drawing images related to radiation onto the tablet of Xenakis' UPIC system. The panning will have you checking that your speakers don't have a loose connection with parts disappearing completely from one channel then back again and vice versa. The sounds range from the alien, abstract, occasionally unpleasant, gently soothing, disorientating and beyond. The first 6 mins or so of 'Gamma' evoke something in me that is difficult to articulate. Like the feeling of being in a deep sleep but also one of nostalgia. Almost like recovering a lost childhood memory. Come to think of it these could be the sounds you hear in the womb or considering the track titles the sounds of a radioactive particle floating through the universe. I could swear I'd heard it before in a dream. Then it changes completely to the pure sound of machines with pulses, frequency squiggles and detailed blips and tones. A real trip and an interesting experiment in the dynamics, randomness and physics of sound. I'd genuinely love to hear the sound that the UPIC system could create in a public context, out of the hands of academia and artists. For example what sounds would be created if an 8 year old boy were to draw a Power Ranger decapitating a dinosaur or a 5 year old girl drawing a pony knitting little wooly socks on the tablet. ..500 copies only for the world....Its funny when they say that. Like there are more copies available from different planets.
