On this self-produced album Dawn Landes has recorded a group of songs reminiscent of raw traditionalism inspired by her Kentucky roots, with which she incorporates expressive lyricism and her mesmerising voice to give us a delightful album. Jack-of-all-trades, she has mastered many an instrument, some of them weird (8-dollar guitars, pink accordions, glockenspiels, optigons), all of them wonderful, they all feature when she plays both live and on ‘Fireproof’.
Through her time in New York Dawn worked as a recording engineer with renowned artists such as Hem, Philip Glass, Joseph Arthur and Ryan Adams. She has played on the same bill as the likes of Andrew Bird, Suzanne Vega, Midlake, Feist, Jane Siberry and Shannon Wright.
·Her band includes Bob Hoffnar and Gary Maurer from Hem and the Madden brothers from The Earlies.
·On ‘Fireproof’ Dawn demonstrates how she plays with the understated ease that her voice and style allow her. It’s a mesmerizing album that sits her firmly up their with contemporaries like Cat Power and Neko Case. On listening ‘Fireproof’ will prove to be one of the most important alt-folk records released 2008.
