What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Ant feeling unmoved.

Lightspeed Champion's third single 'Tell Me What It's Worth' is just in on Domino. For those of you that have been on another planet this is Dev Hynes' solo project (previously of Test Icicles). I can't listen to this guy without thinking of Elvis Costello since Phil made a comparison. It doesn't really do much for me. He has his formula and he sticks with it although he is a talented songwriter. He has a female vocal on the chorus here too . B-side 'Back to Black' is a far superior track. A dark and somber slice of singer songwriter gear that has the man really inject his soul and passion into the music. 7" and CD single.

What the label says:

The track is taken from the forthcoming eagerly anticipated debut album, ‘Falling Off The Lavender Bridge’·‘Tell Me What It’s Worth’ is a sweetly melodic semi-acoustic song with a country-rock edge and is layered with ambitious instrumentation. Backing vocals are courtesy of London based singer-songwriter Emmy The Great and additional vocals are from Omaha’s Tim Kasher, frontman of Cursive and The Good Life.   ·Available on CD single, two separate 7” singles and digital download. 7” (Part 1) is pressed on transparent orange coloured vinyl, 7” (Part 2) is transparent yellow coloured vinyl.   ·On the B-sides of each format, Dev Hynes (Lightspeed Champion) covers music from artists as diverse as Patrick Wolf (who he is currently on tour with), Amy Winehouse and Olivia Newton John’s camp classic ‘Xanudu’.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
