What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus Who? feeling unmoved.

Mum: 'Marmalade Fires' (Fat Cat) I know these crazy northern Europeans are famous for their song titles but this one certainly takes the proverbial biscuit. What do they mean? I know marmalade and fire have the same colour but to imply there's a fire of breakfast spread is just ridiculous, even if you're from Iceland. The tune is a burbling tinkling affair made up of an oscillating bassline, the omnipresent strings and a choral type backing. Another seasonal release.

What the label says:

The second mum single from the album ‘Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy’, coinciding with the band’s first UK tour for three years.
With the departure of Kristin Valtysdottir, the core of Mum is once again Gunnar and Orvar, but the band itself is larger than ever, counting in all seven people. Eschewing an otherworldly, almost magical aura, Mum make experimental music that is naturally, effortlessly imbued with a pop sensibility. Mum’s new material bridges the gap between their universally acclaimed debut and their more expansive sonically detailed recent output. Sonically warm, gorgeously rich and melodic, the band use an array of instruments (guitar, bass, drums, synths, laptops, cello, accordion, mutated brass etc) alongside electronic bleeps, washes, and beats, blurring the distinction between live band and electronic outfit.
The campaign for ‘Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy’ will run well into 2008 with two UK visits this year, and further dates in Spring 2008, three singles, videos and a fully operational band playing sessions, providing, mixes, remixes and more.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
