What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Ant feeling unmoved.

When there is no plastic left in the world and none left to make records I'm going to burn tiny little effigies of the White Stripes for releasing their 'Conquest' single on 3 different 7"s. Black, white and red and they're all sealed with stickers so I'm not going to play them cos you're all going to buy them anyway and help destroy the planet.

What the label says:

‘Conquest’, the brand new single from The White Stripes, is released as a set of three separate coloured vinyl 7”s.
Originally written by Corky Robbins and popularised by Patti Page in the 1950s, ‘Conquest’ is a track with a long, rich history that Jack and Meg have wanted to cover from their earliest days together. They finally realised this ambition on their sixth album, ‘Icky Thump’, setting a pit-heavy, bass-laden guitar against a mariachi trumpet to create a blistering nouveau flamenco number. The track climaxes in a violent musical battle between Mexican trumpeter Regulo Aldama (found in a Nashville Mexican restaurant) and Jack White with his fastest solo on record.
•In addition, this single release will see ‘Conquest’ stunningly packaged and featuring three exclusive new tracks across three 7” vinyl formats – one black, one white and one red coloured vinyl.
Jack and Meg recorded the new tracks recently with Beck, who co-produced all three tracks during a recording session in his living room and contributed vocals and piano to ‘It’s My Fault For Being Famous’ (coupled with ‘Conquest’ on the black vinyl) and slide guitar on ‘Honey We Can’t Afford To Look This Cheap’ (B side on the white vinyl). The red vinyl features ‘Conquest’ (Acoustic Mariachi Version) and ‘Cash Grab Complications On The Matter’.  Inspired by the incredible ‘Conquest’ bullfight video directed by prolific musical videographer Diane Martel, each 7” will also include a Mondo Toro Collector’s Card featuring the near-mythical matadors El Sloth, El Bianca Rosa, and El Perdador. Despite being from early 1900s Spain and Portugal, these bull-fighters look strangely familiar.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
