The Black Dog: 'Flood V3' (Soma) A new genre develops right under my nose without even a glimmer of acknowledgement from mates or anything. So, Techno Dubstep then, a kinda of bastard mutation of the pace of everyday techno- rolling beats and metallic FX- colliding with the bassline rumbles and dubwise production stylings of Dubstep. It's almost like a hyped up version of what people used to call Jungle-Techno, back when Jungle was beginning to emerge. The original version is unsurped by Surgeon's minimalisation on the flip, stripped down to cavernous claps and acidic lines the 'Dub' and the 'Step' elements brought right to the forefront of the mix. There's another version by Sheffield's Bass Soldier who winds the pace down further still with a distinctly aquatic feel. I heartily recommend this record.

The Black Dog deliver a taster of their next album with new single ‘Floods’, a monster release complete with a floor-destroying remix by Surgeon.‘Floods v3’ delves deep into the subconscious of The Black Dog, producing a bass-heavy, cerebrally-intensive slice of techno dubstep that will quite frankly ruin you.   ·Surgeon takes the track a step further on v3.2, maintaining the dark scepticism of the original, adding a pinch of the Surgeon-certificate snappy creepiness for good measure. Anthony Child displays here why he’s the dominant force in techno dubstep.·Fellow Sheffield noisemaker The Bass Soldier finishes off with v3.1, a completely dubbed-out interpretation, killing the pace and replacing it with a trippy intensity that will have you quivering in a pool of blood, sweat and tears.
