Rating: ecstatic This record left Mourning Sun feeling ecstatic.

I haven't heard something so moving as this in a very long time. Miranda's voice just chills you to the bone, not to mention the reverbs and echoes within this song which leave you feeling alone and forgotten. I'm a fan of Miranda and love everything she has done. Out of the few songs currently available which are due on her new release "Songs of X," this is quite possibly my favorite. The lyrics are somewhat hopeful and warm but still seem to leave you feeling utterly depressed. She captured something deep and wonderful with this one. I cannot help but cry every time I listen.

What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Rude feeling happy.

Miranda Lee Richards: 'Life Boat' inc Neil Halstead mix (Sonic Cathedral) This is one of five new titles in a series of seven inch singles from shoe gazing revisionists Sonic Cathedral. Pressed on acid yellow vinyl, this is a country/folk styled slow waltz with slide, steel guitar complete with hazy delayed vocals. Fans of Mazzy Star will appreciate the winsomeness. The flip is turned into a glistening sheen by the Mojave Three's mainstay. My potential single of the week as it makes feel tempted to bust out a cheeky grin.

What the label says:

Limited edition, yellow vinyl, double A-side seven-inch single featuring the original version of 'Life Boat' backed with the distortion and feeback packed Neil Halstead Mix.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'if you can’t be the song, let the song be.'
