What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Caz Mechanic unleashes her debut album on the world and it's rather a good 'un. The full name of the album is the 'Secret Life Of The Wife Of The Captain Of The Ship In A Bottle On The Mantle Piece' on the rather fantastically named label Big Potato. Potatoes rule.... They're up their with bread as my favourite carb. Caz is the drummer from Seafood and Sleeping States so she's a busy lass. The press release says Syd Barrett and I got that quite early on in the album. It's very quirky indie which veers from hazy singer songwriter sounding tunes to folk, to some more brash poppy songs. Stick with it though and lay it a few times and it really hits you in the face as being a good record (alas it's CD only....). I like the gentle hazyness of some of the songs.... This has oodles of charm. Well recomended!!

What the label says:

CazMechanic, the hard-working/drinking/surfing Seafood & Sleeping States drummer has come up with a mighty set of songs. Ranging from sinister folk to beautiful heartbreaking pop, CazMechanic plays as she sings, in a half-dream state, conjuring the ghosts of The Velvet Underground, Syd Barratt and The Shangri-La's. The inspiration swings from frustration and despair to glee and wonder; break-ups and new beginnings... from world-weary to wide-eyed... not forgetting bears, birds and bouncers.
All the songs share freshness, heart and wit in abundance. Bad news that makes you smile. Good news that makes you cry.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
