What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Welcome once again to Ant's welsh music corner where I attempt to inform the world of the great music coming from my native land. Enough of the waffle and on to a magical CD by The Gentle Good. 'Dawel Disgyn' is top quality welsh music. It's not a million miles away from Patrick Phelan. The acoustic guitar is gorgeous and the welsh language vocal gives it a real folk feel. We're reminded of Nick Drake. Heartwarming stuff that gets a thumbs up here. I can assure you I'm unbiased and am recommending this purely on it's merits. A very talented bunch. 7" and CD on Gwymon.

What the label says:

Debut e.p from The Gentle Good aka Cardiff born Gareth Bonello. Dawel Disgyn (’Gently Falls’) is available as a four track 7" or 4 track CD.
With 2 tracks sung in English and 2 in Welsh, Gareth takes his inspiration from artists such as Nick Drake and Bert
Jansch, melding the expected mix of acoustic guitar and banjo with cello, metalophone and glockenspiel.
The Gentle Good have already played at In The City, South By Southwest, Latitudes Festival and most recently The Green Man Festival, and is working on the debut lp for release next year.
There are a lot of folk artists around at the moment, but we think this man’s talent exceptional, and already a favourite with Radio One’s Huw Stephens:
"Gareth’s interest and love for folk music is very apparent from the first moment you hear his music. The music is pure and honest, eager to take you to another world"
"All four songs are delicately beautiful...simple, glowing uplifting songs that will leave a spring in your step. Wonderful songwriting, radiant melodies, restrained strings, simple guitar and a beautifully warm friendly voice...think Nick Drake, Martin Carthy, this e.p is a treaure" -THE ORGAN SINGLE OF THE WEEK
"New Noise was totally ready to reach out to yet another Gruff Rhys/Euros Childs, give them a pat on the headand tell them to play quietley in the corner. Instead the Gentle Good has produced a classic folk ep as indebted to Welsh folk songs as to the delicate string led nuances of Joanna Newsom. The Welsh language used is melodic and flowing - this is plainly simply beautiful" -NEW NOISE.NET

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
