Key Selling Points:
- After the huge reception accorded Pinch's various 12" releases for Tectonic and Planet Mu, twinned with the burgeoning respect for Tectonic as a
scene leading label, 'Underwater Dancehall' is here to take the idea of Dubstep to a whole new level.
- Pinch's 'Qawwali' release on Planet Mu was described as one of the deepest, most involving and subtle dubstep twelves released in the last 6 years.
- "As a whole "Underwater Dancehall" sees Pinch not just pushing himself as an artist, but the scene as a whole. Drowning in cloning and one
dimensional dancefloor functionalism, dubstep deeply needs its visionaries right now before its creative oxygen is cut off. Thankfully Pinch has his
aqualung on." - Pitchfork.

Info:
The dubstep album: a concept still in its early days of existence. In a relatively new genre dominated by vinyl, many artists would not take the plunge
into more ambitious territories and be lucky enough to have an outlet to support their endeavours. Enter Pinch and his Tectonic label. Having already
garnered a huge amount of success with CD releases in the past (namely the Tectonic Plates compilation and Cyrus artist album), the time was right
for Rob Ellis aka Pinch to turn the spotlight on himself for a full-length. But rather than simply string together a compilation of sold-out twelves and
re-edits, Pinch headed back into the studio, gathering vocalists around him, and immersed himself in the idea of the album as a format, a concept, a
complete vision. The results speak for themselves, setting the bar high and in the process we suspect taking dubstep to a whole new level - leaving
budding producers simply tagging along behind him.

PINCH in his own words
"I'm a firm believer that dubstep music is designed to be heard and felt on a fat soundsystem. Albums, on the other hand, are more typically designed
for home listening. When I decided to make an album I thought that one way of makng this sound compatible with a home listening format would be to
collaborate with vocalists. In a way its not really a dubstep album - its an album inspired by dubstep -the sound, the community. I first thought of the
'Underwater Dancehall' tag when swaying away late, late in the night at one of the first few DMZ nights, when it was held in 3rd Base. As I looked
around in a half-cut stupor, everything seemed like a slow motion rave - and with the single purple UV light providing the only illumination - it felt like the
dance was underwater. Under the water's surface a lot remains undefined and mysterious - everything slows down to a different pace, sounds have a
womb-like movement - evocative of a time when we had no unfulfilled needs. All the tracks on this LP were written over the last 12-18 months (with
exception to Brighter Day instrumental which was originally titled 'Qawwali' and released on Planet Mu - written back in 2004) and the music here - I
hope - suitably reflects a period of my life where I've experienced a lot of intense emotions and grown from the experiences. While the programming
and production is far from perfect - the feelings are, at least, honest. Working with vocalists has brought a new (and for me - unpredictable) dimension
to my music which has worked out far better than i ever imagined it would. Juakali, Rudey Lee, Yolanda and Indi Kaur have all individually put a part of
themselves in the tracks they have sung over - I appreciate and respect the messages they have put forward. I enjoyed the collaborative process and
seeing how each artist has reacted to the vibe of the original instrumentals I've written. Personally I prefer the resulting vocal versions that feature on
CD1 but I decided to include a Ltd CD2 of instumental versions so the listener can choose their environment - I appreciate that some people will prefer
to take their own messages from the instrumentals. "
