What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

The Video Nasties 'Karl Blau' EP. It's a 4 track 7" disc of raucous lo-fi britrock stumbling somewhere between Good Shoes and some trashy garage punk ala The Horrors in a dustbin. This is the kind of stuff I still dig as it's breathlessly energetic and unpretentious with a clattering vigor and a bit of a scratchy Buzzcocks vibe that renders the tunes fresh and moshtastic. To be honest, the state of British indie hasn't altered in the 6 months I've been away but the emphasis here is more DIY/C86 (they recorded this in their shed! Hurrah!) seemingly, than post punk overcoat doom or Bloc Party technical stadium sheen which endears me hugely to this fun slab o' wax. Track 4, 'T.V' is a whirling, snarling punky racket with a great lopsided wonky attitude and a relentless shitty organ that just propels it to greatness. Nice to see a good old fashioned 7" EP too, just like what the fab four used to make! Oh and that name is destined for stardom. Also nice to observe that they've taken 7-8 months to follow their debut (which just SHAT out!) A hearty surprise..

What the label says:

WayOutWest are very proud to announce the second release from Video Nasties - Karl Blau EP - the follow up to last year's brilliantly received 'I Wanna/ The 3 New Ideas' debut single. Clocking in at just over eight minutes for four tracks, the EP is another example of this North London group's deft touch for crafting intelligent, spine-tingling mini-masterpieces that simultaneously wear their lo-fi credentials on their plaid sleeves and brandish an inescapable infectious quality. Karl Blau EP is the sound of a band in constant progress.
Produced by Late Of The Pier frontman Sam Eastgate in the most lo-fi of surroundings (hired recording equipment assembled in a garden shed),these four tracks are the product of a summer of incessant writing and recording, casting a slightly darker shadow than the band's previous efforts. Lead track 'Karl Blau' is a hundred mile-an-hour haymaker of raucously reminiscent teen spirit, ever threatening to fall apart in a flurry of flailing guitars and instinctive rhythm that masks a bruised sentimentality and reluctant romance at the song's core This marriage of the immediate and the obscure is what characterises the entire EP, and the band as a whole. Few others could write a song so gripping and relatable whilst name checking ultra-minimalist composer Karl Blau, or convey the pasty-faced paranoia of 'TV' with such B-movie accuracy.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'it's well slicing man.'
