What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus feeling unmoved.

The Whip: 'Sister Siam' (Southern Fried) New Manchester band hoping to set the world alight with their brand of rockin' electro-pop. My immediate thoughts are of fashion conscious young pups with the right clothes and haircuts. Question is; will their style of music and songwriting change with the times, if so have they got a folky styled singer-songwriter ditty up their brand new sleeves. Reared on techno beats as much as latter day indie-pop. Remix on the flip, also available is a 12" with other mixes no doubt.

What the label says:

The Whip, one of the most exciting bands to emerge from Manchester in a long time, return to Southern Fried with the excellent ‘Sister Siam’.
They have just embarked on a tour with Late Of The Pier and Hadouken!, followed by their own 25 date headline tour across the UK.
The band have just finished recording their debut album, produced by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Kasabian, Van She, Adele), due for release next year.    This is a limited release that comes complete with remixes from Justin Robertson, James Rutledge and Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
