What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus feeling happy.

Various Artists: 'I Hate Music / A Compilation Of Output Recordings 1996-2006' (Output) Wherein Mr Trevor Jackson puts a final line underneath his archive of team leaders, genre busters and revivalists. So, thank you for the likes of Fridge and Four Tet's early recordings, the scene stealing pace setting punk-funk revivalists Gramme, the retroclash of Colder, Blackstrobe and Jackson's Playgroup. Some of the acts compiled across two CD's are downright obtuse and difficult, some easy and accessible. Included are the criminally underrated Icarus, some of the others I've never heard of and I've been working in this dirty trade for...oh erm, far too long. There's also a 37 track DVD with loads of previously unreleased oddities. I salute thee, if only for your blind belligerence that pre-empt's the mainstream. Big Up!

What the label says:

2CD+1DVD compilation to mark 10 years and 100 releases of one of the most influential independent labels of the last 20 years.
2 CDs with 30 of the best tracks from Output. Plus a DVD with 37 videos (more than two and a half hours of viewing), including 17 previously unseen videos. Compiled by Trevor Jackson. Trademark Output design.  Includes pull-out ‘I Hate Music’ poster. Long out of print, the Output back catalogue has now been made available again, in celebration of this 10 year anniversary.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'No machine can replace me until it learns how to drink.'
