What we say about Bracken Remixes, by Bracken
This record left our Brian feeling ecstatic.
Now a surprise from a real legend, in our eyes at least. Well it's not actually by him on the whole. The man I refer to is Chapeltown's futuredub-tech-hop-pop boffin Chris Adams and his startling Bracken project. Getting a load of old Hood affiliates plus other fringe music visionaries on board to bugger up and re-scrub choice moments from his Anticon released album is a great idea. Now this Remixes CD is self released in an edition of 300 handmade digipaks & I'm playing the mother LOUD at home so i can pick up the detail I need to hear. Buddy Peace is up 1st with a right old dark, spliced bitch of a remix with a massive hip hop break being interrupted by organic glitch avantcore, eerie atmospherics, shuddering effects and haunting keys with snatches of Chris's disembodied ethereal vocal. Absolutely stunning. James Rutledge abstracts 'Fight or Flight' right up into an orchestra of laptop induced sensory overload & mangled free jazz sound. If there wasn't so much amazing stuff happening there I'd be unsure of whether I actually cared for it much! The Boats re-fix 'Safe Safe Safe' into a gorgeous haze of glitchy clicks & minimal electroid whirring's & cool acid bloops. This really sounds like the future to me as it suddenly bursts into that crisp polyphonic percussive onslaught that sounds like there's about 4 drummers bashing away in tandem. A 'Heathens' instrumental is most welcome before Hands & Fingers do a glittering make-over of 'We Cut the Tapes and Scatter', all fluttery percussion & organic techno touches. Winter North atlantic does odd backward masked broken beat things to 'Fight or Flight', Bracken glitches up 'Of Athroll Slains' to the point it sounds like a messy drug trip, The amazing Third Eye Foundation return from the wilderness to offer up an echo laden chamber of DnB that envelopes the much loved 'Heathens' and takes you on a 4am blissful ride to carefree plains. Finally (phew!) The Remote Viewer winds things down with a gentle acoustic deconstruction of 'We Cut The Tapes..." just Chris's voice floating above some crisp atmospheric glitches and a sweetly picked and plucked guitar. This is ESSENTIAL for any Hood or Bracken fan and is exclusive to Norman Records and Anticon. Please be quick to avoid any disappointment as this is a wonderful collection of sounds.
