Grizzly Bear:
' Friend' EP
(Warp) Ten track mini LP or EP if you will, that includes tracks by the band
covered/performed by CSS and Band Of Horses plus a version of the Goffin/King
track 'He Hit Me'. If you swooned to their last opus 'Yellow House' then you'll
love the similarly hushed, quiet-slow-quiet then loud dynamics. Office synopsis
detects a certain Beatles-esque harmonic vocal quality and dramatic, grandiose
theatrics. These boys can certainly play and it comes through in the deft
composition skills, mood evoking structures and a quiet confidence in
presentation...bloody slick, brash yanks! There's even a Atlas Sound (Bradford
Cox of Deerhunter) tune included. As much a collaboration as their own set.
What the label says:
A beautiful, dramatic & varied compendium of Grizzly Bear collaborations, re-workings & new tracks featuring guest appearances by CSS, Beirut, Band Of Horses, Deerhunter & The Dirty Projectors. The unimaginable adoration for Grizzly Bear from today’s alternative music scene glitterati has created this unique opportunity to bring together the coolest US artists under the banner of the Grizzly Bear ‘Friend’ mini album. Following on from the critically lauded ‘Yellow House’ album from last year, which made both the New York Times and the New Yorkers Top Ten lists, ‘Friend’ retains the magnificent and epic qualities of its predecessor, by shifting from sombre to soaring, from song to song. Personally selected by TV On The Radio and Feist to open on massive USA tours, and consequently asked by Bloc Party to accompany them in Europe. These are, of course, further signs that stars of today have absolutely fallen in love with Grizzly Bear, and they continue to gain fans and respect. This tantalisingly sublime and idyllic album will appeal to fans of Devandra Banhart, Sufjan Stevens, Mercury Rev, Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips, Jose Gonzales, Belle & Sebastian, Low, The Shins, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, The Beta Band, Beach Boys, David Bowie and Brian Eno. |
