What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Phil feeling unmoved.

Here's The Duke Spirit after a wee hiatus back with a new single Ex Voto on their own label. They're back on an indie and they've got some big production (guy who does Foo Fighters and QOTSA) and you can hear that it's pretty polished big sounding indie. It's not too bad either for what it is. It's not making me think of PJ Harvey as much as the previous releases did. It's kinda rock though with hideous wah wah fuzz guitar solo in the middle which sounds awful... it's only a short solo though. Catchy enough stuff though.

What the label says:

Taster single for The Duke Spirit’s forthcoming second album ‘Neptune’. The Dukes Spirit’s bigger, bolder and brilliant forthcoming second album was recorded in Joshua Tree, California with Queens Of The Stone Age producer Chris Goss and mixed by Chris Sheldon (best known for his work with Garbage and The Foo Fighters).  The first release is this four track EP featuring two tracks from the album plus two exclusive tracks. This will be followed by the lead single release of ‘The Step & The Walk’ followed by the album entitled ‘Neptune’

About the humble CD single:

Another digital format and even though they can hold 80 minutes of information (like a CD album would) record companies only fill up a small portion of the disc. Sometimes only 1 or 2 tracks on there totalling 5 minutes or so. It's like going to a restaurant and getting a plate of food with 2 green beans on and wondering where the rest of your meal is. Sometimes they're lovingly packaged though and when the music is good then you're into a winner. Also you get videos on there sometimes which you can watch on your computer. That is excellent.
