What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Don't you hate it when you get water stuck in your ears from having a bath or shower. This is the situation I find myself in this morning and could do with a plunger.. Best crank up the volume then. I just unpacked 'Population'. The latest long player from Canadian indie pop rockers The Most Serene Republic. For your hard earned you get an optimistic, cheery and occasionally somber blend of guitar drums, piano, vocals etc all executed with passion and conviction. Not really my bag but I can appreciate what they're doing. Comes in a nice digipak with booklet. Phil thinks they sound a bit like Mew while the press release makes comparisons to The Flaming Lips and The Postal Service. CD on Arts & Crafts with vinyl to follow.

What the label says:

"Aurally, they are a lush, spacey hybrid of the Postal Service and Broken Social Scene..." SPIN
The first entirely non-Broken Social Scene related signing for Arts & Crafts, THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC are like their younger cousins from
Milton, Ontario. A band who practice at the end of a dirt road and have lovingly sponged elements of indie rock from the last 15 years and made it
their own--their sound is innocent and wide-eyed, raw and idealic. Rocking with a youthful spirit and optimism this indie-pop band have drawn strong
comparisons to The Flaming Lips, Postal Service and Broken Social Scene
In the summer of 2005, THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC burst onto the indie music scene with their dense art-pop breakthrough 'Underwater
Cinematographer' and spent two years touring across Europe and North America with the likes of Broken Social Scene, Starts, Feist, The Strokes.
'Population' is the second studio album by this Canadian indie rock band who draw inspiration from the 90s psychedelic pop pantheon - early Flaming
Lips, Built To Spill, Modest Mouse et al - but with their youthful arrogance, good looks and obvious talent, The Most Serene Republic could never
settle for being mere imitators.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'Bringing you music in return for cash.'
