What we say about We Are All Counting On You William, by Low In The Sky
This record left our Mingus feeling ecstatic.
Low In The Sky: 'We are all counting on you , William' (Abandon Building) I've been coerced into writing this review with a bit of bargaining to boot, an extra 10 minutes more than usual is now my allotted time in which to encourage you to get your ears round this our album of the week. From the off, what immediately comes to mind is the season we're just entering, yeah autumn. It's an album of quiet contemplation, introspection even, captured by a combination of warm keys, crackling atmospherics, crisp percussion and bouncy beats. Coming across like Riz Maslen's Neotropic, bouncy stop-start hip hop beats, resonant piano refrains. Kieran Hebden's Four Tet also comes to mind with sub-folk strums layered over twinkling xylophones and humming strings. For me it's the combination of percussive textures, expansive, cinematic vistas, drop outs and a slightly dubwise approach to the way each sound has it's place. Neither purely a electronic or straight ahead acoustic exercise this collection of pseudo electric-jazz/folk meanderings and hovering, magpie like contrasts of styles and approaches makes prolonged, careful listening an actual treat as one attempts to fathom where it's all going. It's actually a very satisfying listen and could in fact become a bit of a slow burning classic. (will appeal to fans of Four Tet, Chessie, Northstation, Feedle etc...) Watch this space.
What the label says about We Are All Counting On You William, by Low In The Sky:
We are all counting on you, William is the new full length from the Akron, Ohio based trio Low In The
Sky, co-released by Patternbased and Abandon Building. Low In The Sky (Joe Minadeo, Pat McNulty and Corey
Farrow) has been recording music and playing shows together in one form or another for over a decade. They
began as a live backing band for several MC's in the local underground Hip Hop scene. The band quickly built
a reputation through electric live performances and an uncanny ability to translate digital production into
organic instrumentation. Early career highlights include playing shows with underground luminaries like Cex
and Sage Francis as well as mainstream giants including Ghostface Killa and De La Soul.
Low In The Sky's debut (Dear Birds released by Patternbased in 2005) showed the three-piece could craft
instrumentals without need of vocal embellishment. Stylistically, Dear Birds incorporated the pounding
rhythms that defined early Low In The Sky with more complex melody work and thick clouds of drifting
atmospherics. The album sold well with a minimum of publicity and without the assistance of a major
distributor.
The second course has arrived, a 12 song cd in a handsome digi-pack with dirty/beautiful artwork
provided by Ness, a full 3/4 of an hour's worth of music that blurs the line between electronic and
organic songs in strange and wonderful ways. We Are All Counting On You, William is a continuation of the
aesthetic established on Dear Birds, with a few tracks forgoing the use of drums for intricately woven
layers of melody. The sound is hard to pin down, it has the epic scope of Post Rock, the head bobbing groove
of Hip Hop, the outlandish introspection of IDM and a few other genres noone’s come up with a name for yet.
There is a very cinematic quality to this music, conjuring images of car chases and special effects in the
greatest movie never made. In short this is music to feed the soul and head, with two dedicated labels
putting a lot of love and attention up in it. Enjoy!
