Back Ted N Ted - Pop Animal

Pop Animal by Back Ted N Ted

Back To Ted N Ted: 'Pop Animal' (Abandon Building) Coming from the same stable as Low In The Sky, these unfortunately named artists have the same sort of jazz/dub/pop sensibilities as their label mates. Adopting a similar sense of space and attention to detail that allows the sounds to breathe and envelop the listener, they use processed and found dialogue to anchor the often dreamlike sound-scape created. I can't really tell whether they're a rock band merging into a bedroom electronica project, or the opposite way around. Either way their loose grooves, held down by trip hop styled beats adds to studio as instrument ethos of so much early 21st century music. If you like elements of Squarepusher's jazz mentalism, DJ Shadow's cut-up soundtrack-ery then you'll find stuff in here to entertain.

Pop Animal is a new full length from electronic artist Back Ted N Ted (aka Ryan Breen), released
by Abandon Building Records. Ryan has generated a solid reputation through recording a variety of
respected artists (Coppe’ from Bubblewrap Industries and Mango Sweet Rice and Lymbyc Systym from Mush
Records) and extensive touring (playing shows with the likes of Jamie Lidell, Xiu Xiu and Casiotone
For The Painfully Alone). Pop Animal, his official debut, is a 12 song cd that clocks in at just shy
of 50 minutes, featuring eye-popping artwork courtesy of digital design wizard Matt Garrett.

Stylistically, Pop Animal runs the gamut from beat savy club-bangers to found sound collages.
Ryan weaves these pieces together in a repetition of themes, such as snippets of conversations or half
mumbled spoken word prose, creating a cohesive organic feeling. The most striking quality on Pop Animal
is Ryans micro-editing skills. He meticulously deconstructs his songs into rythmic epileptic fits, then
pieces them back together several times per measure.
