What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Rude feeling happy.

Black Dice: 'Load Blown' (Paw Tracks) Compiles three tracks that were released on 12" on DFA and two tracks that were put out by Paw Tracks. Across the ten tracks we are treated to the dense layering, heavily processed experiments in free-floating kind of dry dub, coiled grooves, all manner of sounds and FX flying in and out of the mix. It's probably fair to presume that this output is the result of time spent loosely jamming around looped threads of ideas, all built up into collages of sound and rhythm with the merest hint of melody subliminally marking itself out in the mix. Excellent stuff.

What the label says:

Load Blown is the fourth album by Brooklyn’s Black Dice.
Load Blown is a compilation of three 12" vinyl EPs that have been released with special edition posters plus exclusive unreleased tracks. The Manoman 12" was released on DFA records in the summer of 2006. The Roll Up/Drool 12" was released earlier this year by Paw Tracks. The final EP release (released at the same time as the "Load Blown" cd) will be the remaining five tracks not previously released on vinyl.
The beats drip and roll, tar-pit voices sing into an oil can, and the guitars crank like calliope. The music retains
elements of noise and proto-industrial experimentation, while organically suggesting minimal, electronic, hip-hop and psychedelic ideas as well as those of punk, tropicalia, and dub.
The span of time (nearly 18 months of on-again/off-again work) encompassing the composition and recording of the album accounts for a sprawling variety of sounds and songs. Strange and abrasive, yet somehow more familiar, accessible, and celebratory than ever, this is Black Dice at their most palatable yet.
Tracklisting: 1. Kokomo 2. Roll Up 3. Gore 4. Bottom Feeder 5. Scavenger 6. Drool 7. Toka Toka 8. Cowboy Soundcheck 9. Bananas 10. Manoman

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
