A Place To Bury Strangers - A Place To Bury Strangers

A Place To Bury Strangers by A Place To Bury Strangers

Vinyl version of the groups break out self titled release. Pitchfork 8.4 "Best New Music." Pressed in an edition of 1000. A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called "the loudest band in New York". This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately loud volume. While there are obvious reference points: Pornography-era Cure, early Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and pre-1990s Jesus and Mary Chain, the sound is all their own, in part due to singer/guitarist Oliver Ackermann's day job of building custom guitar pedals (see deathbyaudio.net). Coupled with the solid bass of Jono Mofo and the relentless drumming of Jay Space, the APTBS team is a force to reckon with.

basically if you want a mix of my bloody valentine, jesus and mary chain and new order then this is for you. from the opening chords and just pure sound (they describe themselves as total sonic annihilation).if you were lucky enough to see them at the ICA in London in December you know that these boys fill a room with sound and pure presence.like being played 3 different records at the same time - one in each ear and one infront you, it just works ok? pure sound pleasure.having said that - if you hear I Know I'll See You Again and don't like it, you won't like anything else. quite frankly, IMHO, the most exciting new old sound of the 2008!

the most exciting release this year - and the reason why enterprises like Norman Records need to be cherished for supporting the likes of this. Knowing nothing about this until i saw it as the recommended record of the month (ages ago) - this just grabs you by the lapels, brings you close to its face and then shakes you around but in a way that makes you feel powerful. They describe themselves as sonic annihilation - and that is not a bad description. It is a wall of sound - but controlled sound with a vibe and a direction. Like jesus and mary chain crossed with my bloody valentine and new order. i can give it no higher praise than the name check of those 3 bands!
