What you sayNo-one has reviewed Kung Fu/ Runaway by The Dirtbombs/ Pitch Black City yet.
What the label says:Mahogani Music is one of the labels run by Detroit deep house guru Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon, and the Dirtbombs are giants of Motor City garage rock, fronted by the legendary Mick Collins. The specifics of how this unlikely collaboration came about are unknown - these things can happen when funky guys tread the same streets as other funky guys – so let’s focus on the music… Apart from the consistent high volume and layers of noise for which The Dirtbombs are best known, their sound covers a spectrum of styles from garage rock, punk, and glam, to classic soul and R&B, and that diversity is brought to the fore on these two tracks. ‘Kung Fu’ is a dubbed out garage-ska jam, really loud and in your face with a fuzzed up lead guitar line, while ‘Which One’ is a slower, effects-heavy gritty funk-rock number that will play out on some more adventurous floors in the later hours. Also included to keep Mahogani’s more familiar audience happy is ‘Runaway’ by Pitch Black City, a loose collaborative entity comprised of several Detroit musicians, including percussionist Andrés, vocalist Roberta Sweed, and keyboardist Amp Fiddler. A one-sided 12" credited to PBC appeared on Mahogani in 2003, and they were also featured on Moodymann's ‘Silence In The Secret Garden’ LP on Peacefrog that same year. ‘Runaway’ is one of those typically Kenny Dixon style tracks that has a spacey intro with a breathy spoken word piece, followed by a short, nodding house cut. If you’re unfamiliar with the Mahogani Music experience, here’s a few things you need to know going in… their releases are expensive, non-returnable, usually late, almost always under-pressed, and rarely restocked following their inevitable instant sell-out.
