Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover

Random Spirit Lover by Sunset Rubdown

The Sunset Rubdown have a new album out and I thought we'd write a bit about it in the tiny amount of time we have to do these things.... Random Spirit Lover is out on CD and LP. Thanks Jagjaguwar. This is some chap from Wolf Parade who have a bit of an Arcade Fire fixation and you can hear it here as well. Maybe it's unfair to tar 'em with that brush but there are a lot of similarities. It's more like the early Arcade Fire work than anything else. It's good ole American quirky college rock and well worth checking out. It's kind of grand in its architecture but it doesn't overload you with pomposity. I can't believe I said that! Maybe there's some hints of earlier Bright eyes in there too??

With his most ambitious record yet, Spencer Krug (also of Wolf Parade and Swan Lake) emerges as a special kind of songwriter, inspiring devotion and fanaticism.   In the United States ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’, the previous Sunset Rubdown record, on Absolutely Kosher, scanned over 15,000 copies and was designated with Pitchfork’s ‘Best New Music’ tag.   Other Spencer Krug-related projects have done as well or better. Swan Lake’s ‘Beast Moans’ scanned approximately 12,000 copies in the US, and Wolf Parade’s recent full length sold over 75,000 copies. The release of ‘Random Spirit Lover’ comes on the heels of the recent promotion of Sunset Rubdown following the UK re-issue of ‘Shut Up I Am Dreaming’
