It was the promise offered by South3rn’s mighty bottom-ended sound stash that played a large part in the decision to start up Lodubs, and this release should be the one that sees the label really kick doors off their hinges… and it also marks the start of their exclusive UK distribution deal with or bad selves. Where much of what currently sports dubstep colours seems over-reliant on heavy-handed dymanics, here is a production house with a clear sense of form over function, and we’re buzzed to welcome them to the fold. Ruling the lower reaches of the bass spectrum, ‘Mangione Tribe Dub’ is a groundbreaking tribal affair, leaning towards the JA-meets-Berlin vibe of the Rhythm & Sound crew… proper soundsystem bliss. Conversely, ‘La Rana’ is the aesthetic antithesis, an otherwise unpredictable yet catchy number, laden with soulful Tubby-esque horns, very slight ska rhythm stabs, and a double-thick supple bassline that weaves the other elements into a bright, energetic work. Stepping briskly around the kind of rhythms favoured by the Skull Disco boys, this is an atmospheric piece that uses a subtle build up of moods to make its point. Cut at the UK’s leading low-end cutting room Transition, and packaged in the trademark Lodubs brown paper bag, this is one that no forward thinking basshead can afford to miss.
