What we say
This record left our Ant feeling ecstatic.
I've just been to take the washing out of the tumble dryer and completely forgotten what I was supposed to be doing. All I could think of was the latest masterpiece from Om: 'Pilgrimage'. I'm now playing this CD for the 7th time. It's difficult to recall ever revisiting an album so frequently in such a small amount of time. For those uninitiated Om are the duo of Chris Hakius and Al Cisneros who where the rhythm section of Sleep. Seeing them play live was one of my highlights of the year. An unforgettable, devastatingly powerful set to say the least. Here are a band that seem to connect with their audience on a profound, almost spiritual level. Their music crosses the boundaries of the metal / stoner rock genre and has touched listeners of all genres. A repetitive, hypnotic, mystical riff ritual. You feel imminently satisfied and then the heavyness of 'Unitive Knowledge Of The Godhead' kicks in and just blows you away. The drums sound perfect, the tempo will have you in a total trance. You can hear the Black Sabbath influence in there on the heavier moments with both musicians pounding and chugging at their respective instruments like absolute fiends. 'Bhima’s Theme' breaks down into a quieter mode easing your soul gently down from the heavens and back down to earth. 4 songs clocking in at a total of 32 minutes which is probably considered quite short for an album. Nevertheless this is an epic journey which makes me lose my perception of time. A reprise of 'pilgrimage' completes the album, ending the journey as it begun. Crystal clear, perfectly tweaked recording by Steve Albini and pristine mastering from Bob Weston. You really couldn't ask for more. It's incredibly difficult to articulate how this music makes me feel. You just need to listen. Absolute fucking genius and an instant celestial classic. It's worth noting that the label: Southern Lord have not issued any info regarding a vinyl release. Knowing as they do, that the band have a die-hard cult following of fans that will be predominantly vinyl freaks. Once they've sold X amount of units on this they'll no doubt announce a vinyl version. It's sad when labels take advantage of music lovers in this way. Let's hope they compensate with the inclusion of a bonus track .I seriously doubt it though... File under: Music to make you leave your body. -Ant x
What the label says:
The legendary rhythm section of Sleep : Chris Hakius and Al Cisneros deliver a new classic album recorded by Steve Albini!!! Pilgrimage is OM’s third album (first on Southern Lord). Four songs featuring OM’s unique use of riff, cadence and chant. Lyrical themes address the processes of mind, psychic reality, astral and causal planes of being, and the nature of the soul. Motifs that were initiated on the band’s previous album are continued here unabated. Selected Press for past releases : - "Cisneros’ quasi-monastic chant exploring the cosmos a heavenly trance, both digging deep into their own irresistible heads-down grooves." (Mojo Underground Album of The Month June 2006) - "Metaphysical mantras stretched out across an undulating back beat of electric bass and carefully constructed drum patterns. The most stylistically fluid stoner metal unit of 2006." (Wire) - "A new kind of drone-mantra purity has been achieved." (Arthur Magazine) Tracklisting: 01. Pilgrimage 02. Unitive Knowledge Of The Godhead 03. Bhima’s Theme 04. Pilgrimage (Reprise) |
