Crazy mad record of the week goes to The Lonesomes on Lo;AF Records which is just the oddest thing you'll ever here. Remember those little plastic things which made sheep noises when you turned 'em upside down? This is a whole album full of 'em (they replace the vocals...) and supplement some of the wonkiest random indie guitar music I've ever heard.... It's extremely accessible, ridiculously clever and most likely one of the most annoying records you'll ever hear. I've heard this more times now than I care to imagine and I still reckon it's pretty good. This could be the most ridiculous record you'll ever buy.... congrats to Lo:AF for having the balls for release stupid things like this.THE LIMITED EDITION FORMAT COMES WITH A NUMBERED ARTWORK PRINT; THIS IS THE FIRST NEW RELEASE THROUGH FORTE: CRICKEY, ARE THESE COWS PLAYING THE INSTRUMENTS?SOMEWHERE IN THE GERMAN COUNTRYSIDE, INSIDE ASMALL UNDER EQUIPPED STUDIO, FOUR COWS ARE CONSTANTLYEXPLORING THEIR WEIRD VERSION OF LO-FI ELECTRONICCOUNTRY MUSIC. THEY ARE KNOWN AS THE LONESOMES.WELL, EITHER THAT OR THEY ARE ACTUALLY THE SOLO RECORDINGENTITY OF MUSICIAN ADI GELBART, WHO CLAIMS HE ISJUST THE COWS’ MANAGER. THOUGH THE LONESOMES’ MUSICORIGINATES FROM COUNTRY, IT SEEMS TO COVER A GREATRANGE OF STYLES AND INFLUENCES FROM EASY-LISTENINGTHROUGH LO-FI MINIMALISM TO BROKEN JAZZ AND LIBRARYMUSIC, CREATING AN ENTIRELY NEW GENRE – “COW-FI“.AT TIMES LIKE A DELICATE UPDATE OF SOFT MACHINE,AT OTHER TIMES RECALLING THE OFFBEAT INSANITY OF JOEMEEK, THE DEEP PSYCH VIBES OF EDAN OR THE OTHERWORLDPOP OF GRANDADDY, ‘THIS IS COW-FI’ IS NOTHING IFNOT UNIQUE AND IN THESE INCREASINGLY CONSERVATIVETIMES, A WELCOME BREATH OF FRESH AIR AMONGST THEMASS OF SLOP ROCK AND TECHNO BORES THAT ABOUND.
