Yokota has been releasing music since 1992, originally known for his more techno inspired recordings for such labels as Harthouse and Sublime, he released the first of his more experimental albums Cat Mouse And Me in 1996. The album's intricate grooves that quoted from acid jazz and hip hop mixed with unusual sonic textures and motifs, signposted his future direction. Since then Yokota has explored all forms of music, going far beyond the ambient tag often associated with him. Key albums include Sakura (Leaf) and Symbol (Lo Recordings). Fans include Brian Eno, Philip Glass and Thom Yorke. Label Discography www.lorecordings.com Press Release A best of Yokota selection was never an easy task given the wealth of material but Ben Eshmade from The Chiller Cabinet has done a great job, this selection demonstrates perfectly why Yokota is held in such high regard by so many. The album features classic tracks from all Yokotas ‘ambient’ releases, including tracks from Sakura, Symbol and Grinning Cat. Truly sumptuous yet never sickly. Yokota’s music seems to exist in a parallel universe with it’s own language and logic. Gently stretching and pushing musical boundaries to create new shapes and textures. This album precedes the new Yokota album ‘Love Or Die’ which contains even more ambient miracles of melody and space. “Faced with the daunting but exciting task of putting together a best of list for Susumu Yokota I decided early on that this wasn't going to be simple. I didn't believe there was an obvious selection just waiting to be pieced together and you could easily justify, through different point of view, this album in tens of different combinations if not more. So this CD for me is all about an entry point, a personal but accessible best of for this relaxing but complex music... I've gathered from talking to some of the people who've worked with Yokota that that his music is made up of a stunningly complex amount of layers of different samples and sounds. I think this goes someway to explaining the level of enjoyment which can be found peeling away and exploring these layers and entering each new worlds of sound contained in each song. He has produced so much good and ground breaking music this compilation is just the starting point...” Ben Eshmade (Chiller Cabinet / Arctic Circle) Admirers of his music include Thom Yorke, Philip Glass, Eno and Bjork not to mention a legion of reviewers: |
