What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Maggie feeling happy.

'Hot Banana Wave', by Stranger Son Of WB out on on Marquis Cha Cha. Its a high tempo crash bang single about surfing. I believe they listen to a lot of Captain Beefheart and it's got a certain tomato madness that's quite infectious. The beats are excited, the guitar work crazy and the vocals chanting and Mark E Smith tinged. Also it's the crazy ass brass section that make it sound so wonky and uplifting. Nearly fabulous.

What the label says:

Hot Banana Wave was written and first performed while the band was holidaying in Hawaii. It’s the best song ever written about an ice-cream Sundae surfing the 15 Foot-ers.

It’s even more incredible when you discover the band are a bunch of chaps from Manchester who listen to endless Captain Beefheart, Monks, The Fall, Can and Part Chimp.

“Hot Banana Wave” is backed with “Bidding For Kidneys” and is released on Marquis Cha Cha on September 10th.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'if you blow dry water will it go frizzy?'
