V/A: 'This Merrie City' (Louder Than Bombs), is an 18 track compilation from a collective of Wakefield bands and artists. Setting its stall out in opposition to the so-called Leeds scene also carrying its share of shambling indie bands, Pavement copyists, sixties soundalikes, yer singer-songwriters. there's more than just rhubarb round here!Wakefield. What does it have? Angry chavs, a crap shopping centre and judging by 'This Merrie City'a music scene to rival anywhere in God's own country. and to prove this they start with Little Lee - a firm rhubarb favourite. 'I'll Be By Your Side' is an electro love song of the finest confused pedigree. On a different tract The Spills have it loud, energetic, terrifying. Their track 'Poor Health' is all of the above. When thinking of The New Delamores images of Quentin Tarantino idly picking the soundrack to Kill Bill 3 appear - trust me a good thing. With Sarah Williams & The So called Friends there is no better way to sit in total relaxation and be touched by arguably England's most poetic voice. Then there are Vida Cartel and their sublime track 'Cogs' fractured and oh my lord so good. Nathaniel Green's 'All You Know' is easily, in my opinion one of the best tracks on this CD. A cultured romantic song to play whilst talking your girlfriend into staying with you. Final track goes to Mi Mye and why not? Any song that makes you play it on loop five times is a good choice. And as for the rest, truly an asssortment of indie pop gems. Sadly departed The Critiques, Pylon and Dirty Robbers. Future stars The Old House and existing talents The Blueskins and Napoleon IIIrd coupled with oddball space invaders The Intergallactic Urangutang. I just hope LTB can keep hold of these bands as I'm sure bigger labels will be sniffing around soon. One final thing keep the faith, support your local label and keep it Wakefield.
