Jonquil - Lions

Lions by Jonquil

Jonquil... 'Lions' CD on Try Harder Records. It's no secret to regulars that we loved the last Jonquil album. Such a good record it hurts.... So what's Lions like? Initially I was disappointed. I'll be honest. Anyone who makes such a great debut is gonna find it hard to top it. This is a very different record. Firstly there's loads of vocals everywhere which I wasn't expecting. I'm in a love/ hate relationship with 'em as well. I can't decide if they're genius or bobbins. Musically it's very diverse taking in all sorts of different influences but it's main thing is an oddball poppy folky approach. But there's loads going on as the band have expanded from one chap in his bedroom to 6 folks (in a bigger room I guess?). I think I'd like this more if it was instrumental.... I think the music does enough on it's own though. Still I've played this loads now as I was determined to make it happen for me and it's starting to work some sort of magic on me though it's a far cry from their debut. Mind you if this was their debut I'm sure it would be hailed as genius. Human nature eh... We're never happy...

Jonquil are all aged between 18 and 24 and from Oxford, this album follows their highly praised 2006 debut “Sunny Casinos”. Where their debut was more the bedroom recording project of Hugo Manuel, “Lions” shows their progression into an accomplished multi-instrumental six-piece. Several album tracks have already found their way onto the airwaves via Xfm and Radio 1 with the track “Sudden Sun” appearing on The Wire’s latest Tapper CD alongside artists such as A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Fridge and Jack Rose. “wave after wave of oddly addictive folk-hop lap up against the listener. That the band’s influences include country and folk but also noise should tell you something about their particular modus operandi.” Drowned in Sound. Having been asked to play with the likes of A Silver Mt. Zion, Adem, Tom Brosseau and many more in the last year, the band set out on a three week tour of the UK in September including an appearance at the rescheduled Truck Festival. In the latter two weeks the band join fellow Try Harder artists Youthmovies (whose vocalist Andrew Mears also appears on the album) & US talking-songster Adam Gnade.
