What we say
This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.
Here's another great release. That complete loon David Shrigley has had a load of his lyrics/ stories turned into songs by a load of cool folks and put it in a box called 'Worried Noodles'. Now I'm not just talking about a bunch of no hopers here.... I'm talking about folks like Grizzly Bear, Mt Eerie, Aidan Moffat, Psapp, Simon Bookish, Deerhoof, David Byrne, Franz Ferdinand, Dirty Projectors, Curtains, Liars, Tussle, Trans Am, Scout Niblett, Final Fantasy, Hot Chip, Casisotone, Les Georges Leningrad and loads more. All these nuggets have written songs around Shrigleys crazed lyrics and made a whole new exciting thing for your ears. Also included is a book rammed full of pages with things on the pages (words and pictures at a guess) but I haven't seen inside one to be any more precise than that. This is great fun.... there's some incredible tracks on there and for those who like things a bit weird this is well worth checking out. As is David Shrigley's last album on Azuli which is one of the scariest records I've ever heard. It's just like Blue Jam....
What the label says:
*"I didn't make a record. I couldn't be bothered to make a record. It would have been too difficult. It was easier not to make a record." *So says cult artist David Shrigley of the original Worried Noodles, a lyric book from 2006. Formatted in glorious 12" format, the one missing element was music. Now, a selection of stellar musicians including David Byrne, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip , Deerhoof, Liars, TV On The Radio and Final Fantasy have endeavoured to finish the job, turning Shrigley's lyrics into fully-fledged songs, EXCLUSIVELY available on this album. The result - titled Worried Noodles after the original songbook - is a unique and unprecedented marriage of art and music, and one of the year's finest compilations. *Released as a 3LP and 2CD set containing 39 exclusive tracks (the latter also including a 106-PAGE HARDBACK BOOK of Shrigley's work!), the Worried Noodles album is an exciting prospect for Shrigley's legions of fans. *A graduate of the Glasgow School Of Art, Shrigley has exhibited widely across Europe and the United States. His artwork - which mostly comes in the form of spidery, black and white cartoons - reveals a mordantly absurd sense of humour. Shrigley rose to fame via collected volumes of his work, regular contributions to The Guardian's Weekend magazine, and an acclaimed video for Blur's Good Song . Recently, he designed twelve different covers for Deerhoof's Friend Opportunity album. *Worried Noodles offers another window into Shrigley's bizarre world. Its lyrics are simple poetry: ironic, yet honest and incisive. The first, music-less edition of Worried Noodles (also released by Tomlab) sold out within just six months of publication two years ago, finding a slew of new admirers in pop music circles. In collaboration with Shrigley, Tomlab sent copies of the book to a diverse selection of musicians and bands, from the unknown to the legendary. Many were already familiar with Shrigley's work; those who didn't instantly fell in love with his quirky drawings and words. And all of the artists elected to join this collaborative project. *"I looked through Worried Noodles and laughed," says David Byrne of his choice For You. "But some of the lyrics seemed strangely moving, romantic and sincerely emotional even - and For You is one of them."
