Sunray’s Jon Chambers first pinged our attentive ears way back in 2000 with a stunning collaborative release with fellow cosmic groove wizard Sonic Boom (E.A.R. / Spacemen 3 / Jessamine / Spectrum) for the brain washing hypnotics of ‘Music for the Dreamachine’, a release that was largely inspired by Brion Gysin’s ‘Dreamachine plans’ (a conceptual piece of equipment that enables the viewer to look upon it with closed eyes and evoke waking dreams, in simplistic terms opening the minds eye under natural states without the aid of substances).Chambers is a disciple of the school of mind-bending melodies (previous pupils Spacemen 3, Syd Barrett era Floyd and George Harrison / transcendental period Beatles). Utilising elements of slow burning space rock, Middle Eastern codas and sultry drone-scapes, Sunray / Chambers doesn’t so much craft songs but rather more harnesses the art of decoding long lost mantras from a forgotten time to imbue deeply satisfying meditative states of mind in which the listener can achieve an absorbing spiritual inner calm / peace.
