After previous successes in the form of Benni Hemm Hemm and Múm, our boys in Berlin yet again tap into the Scandinavian geysers of quality music to present Seabear to an unsuspecting world. Originally a one-man music project, now a six-piece band, Seabear create perfectly delivered indie-pop gems, clearly drawing influences from their counterparts in the states, but not being ashamed to bring a naïve, Icelandic charm to the forefront of their sound. As chief-songwriter and frontman, Sindri Már Sigfússon's half-whispered vocals talk of lazy summer nights and blooming love, while a small orchestra of sounds blossom around him; from violins and pianos to accordions and rattling percussion. If each song on 'The Ghost that Carried Us Away' is a chapter in some kind of cryptic story, then 'Hospital Bed' must be a beautifully pivotal moment in the narrative. As the sound of two violins dance around a gently coaxed piano, the mood of the song is already set, and as Sigfússon mutters 'we spread our blankets over the lake', you are laying with him on some kind of frozen fjord, looking at the stars with only the heat of a significant other nuzzled close to keep you warm. This music makes no secret of being delicate, even 'soft' perhaps; instead it shouts it at the top of its lungs, appealing to the sentimentality in even the coldest of heart. To say Seabear could be loosely described as a softer, slower, more naïve-sounding Arcade Fire or a more organic Stereolab is no understatement - their perfectly balanced mix of instruments could even be compared to artists as diverse as The Notwist, Sufjan Stevens or Mountaineer. Upon first listen, 'The Ghost that Carried Us Away' may sound like a pretty collection of short pop songs, which it is, but of course on further listens more and more depth is exposed until the songs will wrap themselves around you like the warm arms of a loved one and not let go until every smile has been drained from your unfaltering lips. As the summer creeps up on us from behind the clouds, you'll find Seabear soundtracking your every moment 'til autumn… |
