What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Rude feeling happy.

Monkey Swallows The Universe: "The Casket Letters" Highly melodic radio friendly folkie pop from the Sheffield five piece. If you like Belle And Sebastion, twee Indie-Pop of yesteryear like Sarah and the current vogue for good, clear and concise songwriting then this one's for you. Ten tracks of un-challenging ear candy if you like acoustic guitars and strings swooning alongside some very sweet sounding vocals.

What the label says:

Back in 2006 their 2006 debut album for Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation The Bright Carvings was described as "having a sound that transports you back to the days of the late 80's and listening to John Peel religiously every night - a mix of The Siddleys, Belle and Sebastian and Sarah Records".  Fast forward one year and the band along with their debut single for Loose - the Grand National winner inspired ‘Little Polveir’ - seem to have hit the mainstream.   In a 5 star Single Of The Week review The Sun described it as a "a swoonsome melodic treat" while the Daily Mirror said "roll over Charles Darwin and tell those musical evolutionists the news - there's yet more Sheffield Monkeys beside the Arctic variety".  There were live dates by request in support of Richard Hawley , The Long Blondes and Camera Obscura, sessions for XFM, 6 Music and Radio 4's Loose Ends as well as regular spins from the likes of Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens. All of which leads us to the release of ‘The Casket Letters’ - an album named after a series of letters allegedly written by Mary, Queen of Scots which were used against her by supporters of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. "We've tried different things on this album and have achieved a fuller, more developed sound" says chief writer and singer Nat Johnson. "Whilst we can still be delicate we've tried to show a range of what we're capable of and we're continuing to expand this all the time. We hope there's something on here for everyone; whether it's a simple song of optimism, a ghost story, a bit of tongue-in-cheek country or something you can dance to".  Packed with melody-heavy folk-tinged pop delights it's the sort of album that ticks all these boxes and will hopefully convince people that there are now two Monkey monikered bands from Sheffield to be reckoned with.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'foiled again.....'
