Forming as all bands should, at a party on New Year's Eve 2002, Pony Up
haven't looked back and have been touring extensively ever since. When
it
came time to record their debut album, Pony Up went straight to
Montreal's legendary HOTEL2TANGO STUDIOS, with the help of local go-to
recording genius HOWARD IAN BILERMAN (ARCADE FIRE, WOLF PARADE) and American import, engineering hot-shot BRIAN PAULSON (BECK,
WILCO).
Although
made up of slightly darker tones and slower beats than their debut EP,
'Make Love To The Judges With Your Eyes' shows the band has not
lost
their pop sensibility or confessional lyricism. It is an album full of
confidence, class and skill. One of Pony Up's strongest suits was their
ability
to tell a story straight and deliver a saucy lyric with
honesty and openness. It will appeal to fans of bands as broad as REM,
THE CARPENTERS and
SLEATER-KINNEY. With songs sung by either the
straight-shooting, classic-pop lover Laura, or the more enigmatic,
less-than-conventional Sarah -
both backed by the Pony Up choir - 'Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes' is the sound of a band hitting its stride.
Pony
Up were a highlight at 2007's SXSW in Austin, Texas as well as
Australia's Valley Fiesta Festival and have played New York's legendary
CMJ festival to sold out parties. Their single, "The Truth About Cats
& Dogs (Is That They Die)", was voted #47 on Australia's Triple J
Radio's 2006 Hottest 100, a poll with over 650,000 votes. Pony Up will
tour the UK & Europe in October 2007. "Rather splendid" - Gideon
Coe, BBC Radio 6
"These girls sure know how to add slickness and
vitality to a slightly clockwork-driven Indie scene…. worth your every
shekel" 4/5 - My Village UK
"Pony Up take woozy harmonies, jangley gits and plaintive piano for a walk down a dusky college-town street" - CMJ
